The deadline to reinstate two officers is the end of this week
Jersey City could be fined tens of thousands of dollars in coming weeks if it does not rehire two police officers who were fired for using cannabis while off duty. The city was ordered by the state Civil Service Commission in July to rehire the officers within a month, a deadline that expires at the end of this week. If the city does not rehire the officers by then, it faces fines.

We continue to follow the fight over cannabis use and cops in Jersey City.
According to the New Jersey monitor, Jersey City could face daily $100 fines, up to $20,000 max if the administration doesn't reinstate three police officers who were fired for their off duty marijuana use.
The State Civil Service Commission overturned the 2023 termination of those officers.
The deadline for the city to rehire them or face penalties goes into effect this Saturday.
It comes as an attorney for one of the police officers filed a wrongful termination lawsuit last week in Hudson County Superior Court, accusing Mayor Steve Fulop of using their jobs as a political gimmick to get more attention for his 2025 gubernatorial bid.
Now, Jersey City officials have fired or suspended multiple cops for using recreational cannabis off duty, arguing the officers are violating federal law and can't carry a firearm or ammunition.
But so far, they've lost that battle.
