Hi, everybody.
It's great to have you with us for postgame Notes here on LP.
I'm Victor Howell, and we certainly have a lot to talk about here in the next 30 minutes.
Can you believe it?
Now, with week four in the books, basically a third of the college football season is already done for the 2026 campaigns.
We say goodbye to the month of September.
Lots to talk about from week for the Lions for southeastern.
Off of big road win one week ago.
Back on the road in central to this past week.
Two huge games for our Swac teams both out of state Grambling in Texas and southern over in Jackson, Mississippi.
And they played for the Bell Down in New Orleans between Tulane and Southern Miss.
We'll get to all of that coming up in the next 30 minutes, but let's start in Baton Rouge.
Why?
Because it was a matchup of two top 25 teams, and neither one of them could afford a second straight loss in conference play.
Beautiful night for football in Baton Rouge.
Sold out at Tiger Stadium once again, over 102,000 on hand.
Going into this one, remember Texas A&M came in and ruined LSU last year to the point of firing the head coach.
Well, let's get going here.
Second drive for the Tigers Dylan Jones up the middle.
Look at them.
Find space and go 36 yards.
They refuse to get brought down before he finally gets down inside the 25 yard line later, Jones gets the direct snap, punches it in and the Tigers are on the board first.
Seven nothing over the Aggies at seven three.
Now under four minutes to go in the half.
Sam Leavitt look at the patience this time in the pocket.
Avoids getting hit.
Hits Winston Watkins near side 35 yards before he's knocked out of bounds after a penalty.
Makes it first and 2011 goes to Watkins again.
36 yards as he gets behind the defenders and takes it inside the 20 yard line.
Tigers will finish this drive in the air.
Look at the touch from Leavitt to Jackson.
Harris corner of the end zone.
He makes it 143 LSU now early in the third.
More so Reid who destroyed LSU one year ago who he had a night to forget.
Sacked by Thomas Cooley for a loss of 11.
Here's the play that really locked things up.
Fourth and one.
Everybody packed in.
And else who's going to just get the first I love it takes the snap Jackson Harris breaks free 57 yards.
And Kiffin knew right away that this play was going to work.
And LSU was up 21 to 3 later in the third 28 to 6.
Leavitt across the middle to Harris again 36 yards on this completion.
Three plays later Landon Clarkson at quarterback.
He takes the snap and he scores it.
It was a fun night.
If you were wearing purple and gold in Tiger Stadium compared to one year ago when Texas A&M came to town, and LSU heads in October with some momentum, getting the win 35 to 6.
Jackson Harris six catches for a buck 63 and two touchdowns.
Look at the average yards per play.
LSU almost eight yards to play.
Texas A&M barely over three.
LSU steps out of conference next weekend to welcome the Cowboys from McNeese.
Here's Lane Kiffin after the big win.
And this much like the opener which was the challenge to them to just forget everything else.
Forget last week.
Forget rankings.
You know, I felt like our guys played great in the opener because they were just excited to play.
They were excited to come together as a team and go out there and play in their first game in Tiger Stadium.
And I feel like in a way they they played very similar today to that suffocating defense, which is what we talked about all week to try to put this quarterback in and and did a really good job defensively.
You know, I think that that was big for the few people that were here last year, especially Blake for the last two years.
You know, to play that way and limit Marcel whatever he had on here minus yards rushing I think, good game planning guys doing a lot of things.
Right.
Well, he didn't have to think and more.
Reed did have negative yard rushing one last year.
He went over 200 as a team.
The Aggies were nine short of a scene.
But look at the passing yards 312 for LSU and almost 18.5 yards per completion for LSU quarterbacks, four sacks for that suffocating Tiger defense, none for A&M.
And in the red zone.
LSU got there six times, converted on four.
And that's how you get a big dominating win.
Dallas, Texas and the State Fair, the site of the State Fair Classic between Mickey Joseph's, Grambling Tigers and Prairie View.
Grambling coming off of its by week.
And this is the start of a huge four game stretch for Grambling scoreless in the second quarter, and it looks like a safety.
However, previous quarterback manages to barely get out of the end zone, escapes by half a yard.
Later in the drive on third and two, the Grambling defense once again standing tall Jamal Jordan on the stop.
Midway through the second, it's the Tigers who strike first.
Ashton Frye to Nissan Dickerson 50 yards on the completion, takes it into the house, and with seven and a half to go in the second quarter, it is seven.
Nothing.
Grambling Trevor responds, a nine play, 75 yard drive.
Look at the time in the pocket for Tevin Carter, who eventually finds Trayvon Jones behind the defense.
And he takes it in from 37 yards out.
We're tied at seven.
And that's the score at the break.
Just under six minutes to go in the third.
Jabari cook and doll so short he gets lost.
Look is he down.
Where is he.
Bounces to the outside.
He winds up taking it into the end zone.
17 yards on the score.
It's 147.
Let's go.
Fourth quarter.
Jacoby Robinson is in at quarterback.
And Jacoby out of the shotgun.
Jacoby we're going.
We're going left to go.
Jacob, you're going the wrong way.
He gets sacked for 25 yards on the loss.
Bad news for the Tigers five minutes to go into the quarter.
Now in the fourth Tevin Carter to Heckman.
And it's a heck of a way to end a ten play drive 77 yards.
It's 217.
Gee Menlo aren't done.
Jacoby Robinson to Tyson George 47 yards over the top.
Great catch for the touchdown 2114.
Now it's third and two.
The defense has to make a stop to get the ball back and have a shot at tying this game up.
Just under two minutes to go.
They only needed two yards and they got more.
That's going to wrap it up right there because they're able to convert it run out the clock.
Good ball game here but just not enough.
If the Tigers saw 21 to 14 just 72 rushing yards for gambling.
And the Tigers did play for quarterbacks.
We'll see what they do next week at home October 3rd when they welcome Alcorn State for homecoming in Jackson, Mississippi.
The halftime show was the real star of the ball game between Southern and Jackson State.
It's the Boombox Classic, but it was a huge game for both of these teams.
Very important to get off to a great start in Swac play.
And this is a series that Jackson State has owned as of late.
So let's take it a beautiful crowd on hand as well.
Gorgeous night for football and Jackson.
Plenty of fans there as you would expect to support these two teams.
Jay state likes a fast pace and just over three minutes in.
Jared Lockhart to Jenny Riley for 38 yards.
Takes it all the way down to the one next play Nate Blunt the fourth.
Punches it in just like that.
Jay state three minutes and change on the scoreboard at seven.
Nothing but the Jags flex some offensive muscle.
Watch Kristen Johnson dumps it over here to Trey Holly.
And you know Holly knows what to do.
It turns it up.
Field 23 yards on the game.
Takes it down to the Tiger 12.
But they only get two more yards in the next three plays.
So the Jags settle for the first seven yard field goal.
But it's points on the board.
And it's now seven three.
It took Jay State one TV timeout and one play to extend the lead.
Jared Lockhart it's a heave.
And Nate Rembert is there to get it 70 yards.
Hey do a little thing making those poor.
Yeah he's scoring for six.
March 14th three.
Jay stayed on top early second now up against their own goal line.
And look at the hole in the middle for blunt the fourth.
And there he goes 48 yards and eight.
What was a problem for southern.
It would lead to a touchdown.
Makes it 21 to 3.
Jay state now under six minutes to go in the half.
Trey Holley now finds the end zone right up the middle six yards.
The point after is missed.
So it's 21 to 9.
Jay state jump ahead to the third.
It's now 28 to 9.
Mike Franklin look at Mike Franklin.
Grabbed some highlight time 51 yards.
He takes it all the way down inside the five yard line.
He would score on the next play to make it 2817.
Fourth quarter the only score for the Tigers in the second half.
Look at this Jared Lockhart's pass is deflected.
Goes up in the air.
And Alex the offensive lineman catches it.
It was that kind of night for the Jags 35 to 17.
Jay state wins it.
It's the eighth straight loss to the Tigers for southern.
Jay state had over 260 yards.
And what you call quote big plays.
It's a splash offense.
Next up for southern.
They're back home on the bluff when they welcome Arkansas-Pine bluff.
But we can't emphasize enough how important it was for the McNeese Cowboys to try to get a win Saturday night at home.
Look, we're not even out of the month of September.
And after Saturday night's game against East Texas A&M, McNeese has one count them one home game left for the rest of the season.
And that's at the very end of October.
So a huge game to jump back into conference and try to defend the home field.
That's what McNeese was trying to do Saturday night.
Let's take it to Navarre Stadium.
East Texas A&M came rolling in.
Cowboys coming off a tough road loss one week ago, but they liked playing at home.
Crazy crazy opening kickoff here all Harrison gets it on the goal line.
Looks like he's bottled up inside the ten.
But no he's not.
He breaks free.
Gets it down to the 30 and then coughs it up.
And the Cowboys jump on top of it.
10s in three different directions, but they'll take it.
McNeese settles for the field goal and it's three nothing.
Cowboys now six nothing.
Cowboys four minutes to go.
In the first major McBride breaks off a major run, gets through the line, gets to the back of the defense.
Third level and it's 40 yards down the far side line.
It sets up Jacobs to Sean Sallis.
This is seven yards in for Sallis.
Walks it in.
And now East Texas has the seven six lead.
Third play of the second quarter the quick pass from Jake Strong who got the start at quarterback to Jamal Levi.
Cowboys are back on top.
40s into the third.
Omari Wiggins.
He has had an excellent season for an ace.
Find some space cameraman.
Giddy up.
There he is.
He finally finds him.
Meanwhile, Wiggins is just off to the races 74 yards.
He takes it to the house and it's 20 to 10.
McNeese middle of the third.
Watch the deflection here as a quarterback hits Micah Simpson.
Simpson gets popped into Paul's right into the hands of Landon Barrett.
Take another look.
The quick sidearm pass.
And then it pops straight up and right into the hands of Barrett.
Great concentration for him to get the interception and the Cowboys take advantage.
Jake Strong the shovel pass to Hutch Swilling and he takes it 42 yards as he's gone far.
Sideline switches the ball to the outside.
Hand gets it inside the 22 plays later instead of receiving Hutch is running and scoring.
Knocks it into the end zone.
It's 2710 McNeese two minutes to go in the third.
A quick strike here.
Rodriguez to Caden Taylor.
He's all alone.
It's a defensive breakdown 49 yards and it's 2717.
Fourth quarter 2724.
East Texas A&M has to score from 65 yards out.
And they don't even get it ten yards McNeese defense stands them up.
And that's the win 27 to 24.
Just what McNeese needed.
Wiggins 162 total yards and a touchdown Jake Strong.
Remember he started the season at quarterback back in at starter Saturday night.
202 passing yards and a touchdown.
Also ran for 34.
McNeese jumps out of conference and heads to Baton Rouge for the opening weekend of October, where they will take on LSU inside a Tiger Stadium.
Here's Matt Venter after the game.
All in all, we needed to win.
I think that's the most important thing and give our guys credits.
I thought we, hung in there and, you know, kept fighting and physical game.
I like their team.
I said that coming in.
I think they're really talented at wideout.
I think they're running backs are really talented.
And defensively they're they're all over the place and they pressure and Zebo and some of those guys are really good players.
So like I said glad to win and move.
Move forward another week.
Well let's take up to Natchitoches where one week after a big time winner, Monroe, the Southeastern Lions were visiting the demons from Northwestern State and head coach Blaine McCorkle looking for their first win of the season early.
First, it's the demons moving the ball.
Zay Davis gets it outside for 11 tough yards, and that leads to a pain Williams 44 yard field goal.
But he misses it out wide to the left.
Nine plays later, the Lions know exactly what to do.
Chad Elzy straight up the middle and untouched.
32 yards for the score early.
Quick strike for the Lions and they are up seven to nothing on the ensuing kickoff.
Antonio Hall takes it inside the five, gets sandwiched here and the ball comes loose.
And the Giants or the Lions jump on top of it, and it shows you just how fast things can turn and change in the game.
Because four plays later, now the Lions are up 14 nothing.
Calvin Smith gets bottled up but then bounces it to the outside, and head coach Frank likes what he sees early on.
Demons go three and out.
So now to the next southeastern possession.
Kyle Low goes up top to Lonnie Shinn.
Junior 25 yards on the score and it's 21.
Nothing in the opening quarter second quarter now five minutes in the Lions are moving.
Watch the touch pass.
We're going over to the other side of the far side Desmond Jefferson 26 yards Chad Elzy then punches it in for his second touchdown.
It's 28.
Nothing.
But then the demons start to settle in.
And this is what has been saying.
They get off to a rough start, but then they find their rhythm here.
Zach Wilkie to Brandon Webb.
He makes a move and takes it in.
43 yards out.
It's 28 to 7 after a Lions field goal made it 31 to 7.
Wilkie is going to dump this one off to Zay Davis just over the defender there.
One yard on the completion 38 yards on the effort.
Look at say Davis.
Go all the way across the other side.
Takes it down inside the 20 to the 13 yard line.
Two plays later Wilkie to Cam Davis in the corner of the end zone.
I'd like to see that reception again.
Beautiful touch by Wilkie.
Deep left corner of the end zone and watch Davis come down with it with his leg in the end zone.
That's a touchdown 3114.
But on this night too much of the green and white late third quarter it's 3814 Dickie Joseph.
Somehow people are still kicking the ball to this young man.
And he keeps showing them what he can do.
He takes the punt 68 yards on the return.
Joseph, one of three Lions on the night with more than 100 all purpose yards.
McCorkle talked about it on game.
That's how he liked watching them on film because they do so many things right.
52 to 21 is the final score.
The Lions have two players eat with over 100 rushing yards, the first time since 2017.
Next up for southeastern on the road at Texas Rio Grande Valley from Northwestern State.
They will be at Lamar.
Here's what Blaine McCorkle had to say.
He observed after the game.
I think we played the close to the exact same football game two weeks in a row.
Found ourselves down in a hurry early with some costly mistakes, and then we proved ourselves that we can play with a lot of people at this level in this country.
You know, we're proving that down in, down, out.
We can play with people, but we've got to be more disciplined and consistent, you know, in those other areas to give ourselves a chance.
You know, at the end of the day, this is an improving football team and that's good.
But the little things are killing us right now.
And as a coaching staff and as a head coach, that's our job to get those things right.
Well, as for the Lions, they have found their footing these last three weeks, but specifically look at the last two games averaging 45 points of contest, a perfect six for six in the red zone next to no penalties and maybe most importantly, no turnovers through eight quarters.
Now, the Lions enjoyed their bye week before returning to action in two weeks, but certainly playing well.
The Lions from southeastern.
Let's take you up to Monroe, where it was homecoming in Monroe for the Ulm Warhawks, who welcomed Florida Atlantic to town.
These two teams used to be conference opponents before four left the Sun Belt four caps off an early drive midway through the first quarter.
Antonio Johnson, eight yards on the touchdown run, made it seven.
Nothing.
Monroe Aiden Armenta, back in its starting quarterback for the war, Hawks finds one of his top go.
Two guys, Nick Trujillo, 41 yards down to the three yard line for Trujillo.
Three plays later, Armenta to Jace.
Hope you can see him open right back corner of the end zone and we are tied at seven start of the second quarter here.
Caden camp is the quarterback for four.
He's going left 26 yards to Dom Henry who finds his way into the end zone.
It's good 1474 on top after the Warhawks go three and out.
McKenzie Ryan has the rugby style punt Easton Messer you would think with defenders coming on and would let it go.
He decides to pick it up, run the other direction and you could tell this is going to be trouble.
Look at the wall starting to form and he has himself an entourage, a spin, three missed tackles, keeps his balance.
When it's all said and done, he takes it the distance and it's 217 for Ulm starts the next drive on their own 25.
And it ends there because Aiden Armenta hits l t Robinson and he is all alone in front of his own bench.
75 yards, 12 seconds, one play and the warhead walks right back in it.
It's 2114 later in the second and we're going to need to work on some tackling.
We saw that punt return right felt camp to Kelby Vallis who somehow gets 27 yards out of this.
Missed that one tackle slips inside forward, finally gets tripped from behind but gets it down inside the 30.
Ethan Irvin then punches it in.
Made it 2814 for they would cruise from there and unfortunately they ruin homecoming for you all.
Monroe 45 to 17 is your final score.
Just 54 rushing yards.
They really tried to put it all on.
Armenta.
You're not going to do that when your opponent runs for 245 or meant to 23 of 29 for 278 and two touchdowns back in the starting lineup.
Now the Warhawks go back on the road as they search for win number one.
They'll be in mobile next weekend to take on the Jaguars from South Alabama.
Well, after a tough road trip one week ago, Tommy Ryback had his Nicholls Colonels back home in Thibodaux, and actually, that's where they like to play under him.
Since Ryback, he took over as head coach, they've only had one home loss.
It's been a very comfortable, confident place for them to play, but they had quite the challenge Saturday because Lamar came into town.
Lamar has been on a three game road by themselves and their top 15 in the country.
This was going to be a tough one and indeed it turned out to be.
Let's take it to the highlights and show you how things played out down in Thibodaux.
For these colonels from Nicholls.
There's Tommy right back on the sideline.
It'll be a long afternoon for him.
Aidan McCown quarterback for Lamar.
Problem Dave and Driscoll.
He finds him.
Big strike 33 yards Lamar can't wait to get back to Beaumont Texas.
They've been gone for nearly a month.
So they knew coming in this was actually their conference opener.
So they wanted to play with confidence.
Look what they did here.
We're not even two minutes in.
And it's a flea flicker McCown to Blake Thomas 41 yards for play 78 yards in just over a minute.
It's seven nothing.
Lamar next drive five plays 2.5 minutes.
McCown up top to Driscoll.
Tiptoes the sideline and gets it in 49 yards.
It's 14 nothing.
Colonels then settle in Shane Lee bounces this one.
Left side goes 26 yards takes it inside the ten down to the six.
Two plays later Ian Rodrigue to Ellis Stewart top the corner of the screen.
He takes it in and it's 147.
Ensuing kickoff.
By the way folks at home, if you ever hear the announcer say ensuing kickoff, you know something's happening and it's probably not good for the team that just kicked it off Caleb Holmes from his own 18 yard line.
He has images of six floating in his head.
Look how fast he outruns everybody gets it down 82 yards for the touchdown.
And Lamar pads the lead.
Colonels in trouble on special teams the other way a muffed punt that would lead to another Lamar touchdown.
Second quarter.
It's 357 Lamar LaDainian McDowell up the middle for 11 yards.
Mama said there'd be days like this.
And Saturday unfortunately for the Colonels was one of those days because the red and gray had a rough one.
49 to 18 is the final score.
Lamar scored a touchdown on every first half possession.
Most points ever scored against the Colonels as they head back home to Beaumont, and the Colonels had actually passed Beaumont over to Houston next weekend when they take on Houston Christian.
The Raging Cajuns wrapped up their nonconference slate Saturday night in North Carolina, facing Charlotte for the first time in these two programs history that is lunch Winfield.
He's the leading rusher in the Sun Belt Conference, though.
He's a quarterback.
Second quarter a sign you know things would go your way up three nothing Winfield tucks it and runs fumble but it bounces right back into his hands.
The drive ends with Winfield rolling out.
Passing to Steven Blanco usually punches it in as a running back.
That's his only catch of the game.
But it's a three yard touchdown.
Ten nothing.
The Raging Cajuns almost a half time.
This time the fumble did not bounce the Cajuns way.
Winfield and Blanco don't exchange it clean.
It seemed Winfield wanted to keep it.
It's now loose and Charlotte's Jaden Johnson scoops it up.
64 yards.
Charlotte's offense had 47 yards in the half.
That one play went for 54 and it's ten seven.
3.5 minutes into the third Winfield to Trenton Chaney.
This is good for 41 yards.
Beautiful catch and run here as he starts breaking away from defenders before he's finally brought down.
But it leads to a seven yard end around from freshman J.J.
Gardner.
He punches it in.
And at 177 Cajuns starting to take control closing in on the end of the third cold and pass is going to float a little high.
This one gets picked off here by Brant Gordon Junior.
That raging Cajun defense starting to stand tall.
Remember one week ago, Michael Decimal was high on the way that defense had been developing.
It leads to a Tony Sterner 44 yard field goal.
It's good.
And it's 20 to 7.
Charlotte desperately needs a conversion.
Its fourth and one, but once again that Cajuns defense will have none of it.
Look at the wall they form in the middle.
It's a loss of three yards.
They hold Charlotte with nothing.
And the ball goes back to the raging Cajuns.
Under ten minutes to go now in the fourth.
And Winfield again the Sun Belt Conference is leading rusher takes it in from nine yards out for the score.
The Cajuns get the win to close out nonconference play.
And they do it and find fashion 34 to 7.
Total yards 292 not as explosive for the offense, but they held Charlotte to a buck 37.
The red zone Cajuns were perfect five for five.
Charlotte never reached inside the 20.
Next up for the cage as they come home to Lafayette and celebrate homecoming with the Red Wolves from Arkansas State making the trip to Lafayette.
Well, the last time Southern Miss went to New Orleans and beat Tulane on its home field was back in 2022.
It was a three point game, and the Golden Eagles were coached by Will Hall.
Saturday night they were back in New Orleans playing for the battle of the Bell against the Tulane Green Wave, coached by Will Hall.
He didn't want to talk much about it this week.
He knows an emotional game.
And let's take it a yeoman and show you how things played out.
This was a good game.
We talked about this on game notes.
We knew we had a feeling this was going to be a tight ball game.
These teams are known to play that way.
And well here we go.
Opening drive first minute Tulane's defense aggressive.
Landry Liddy sacked by Makai Williams.
It's a loss of seven.
Next drive.
Third and five.
And Liddy sacked again.
This time it's Ed Smith the fourth.
And it's a loss of seven.
Southern miss had trouble getting its offense going two lanes offense strikes.
First came Samantha to Anthony Brown.
Stephens 47 yards gets into the end zone at seven.
Nothing Tulane Greenway three plays later or early second quarter Golden Eagles find protection for Liddy.
He finds his receivers first.
It's Mario Sanders for 21 yards down.
A few plays later, Liddy is going way up top to Davis.
Dalton 32 yards nearside.
Great catch in the corner of the end zone and it's tied at seven.
Next Tulane drive.
Sixth play of the drive Morris Turner watch one hesitation.
And then he shot out of a cannon 43 yards.
He takes it to the house and it's 147.
Green wave southern miss comes right back though Stephen Robinson.
He's actually the top running back in the Sun Belt Conference.
Number two rushing behind lunch Linfield.
But this one's good for 18 yards.
He had 73 yards on 18 carries.
Later Liddy to Mario Sanders third and nine.
But he gets 14 for the touchdown.
And we're tied at 14.
Let's go to the third.
Liddy looking right finds a little 41 yards.
Another big splash play for Southern Miss.
And the Golden Eagles are in business three plays later first and 20 after a penalty from the 22.
But Sanders gets all 22 second touchdown of the game.
And now Southern Miss has a seven point lead on the road.
Green wave needs some points.
So first they get it from Cooper Hellgate.
It's good from 26.
Now the green wave down 2117.
Here are two huge plays in the ball game.
First on third and five leading to the end zone.
But Anthony Rodgers with the outstanding defensive play breaks it up.
So now next play.
It's a 44 yard field goal.
Oh boy.
He pulled it wide left.
So Tulane gets the ball back.
And on the second play of the two lane drive Maurice Turner with the play breaks a tackle their heads down the middle.
Tackle tackle nope.
Keeps his balance.
Goes to everybody 74 yards.
Turner had a monster night.
And indeed the battle of the bell keeps the bell in the Big Easy as Tulane gets the win over Southern Miss by the final score of 24 to 21.
Look at all the total offense over 800 yards of total offense.
Maurice Turner 12 carries for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Next up for the wave a bye week.
And then they're on the road at Army.
Here is head coach Will Hall afterwards.
Our heart and our resolve and our love for each other and our character is incredible.
It's incredible.
