Thank you.
And we are off and running, and it's great to have you with us for game news here on LPB.
As we close out the month of September.
Believe it or not, alongside my super Bowl champ partner Scott Shanley.
I'm Victor Howell.
Great to have you with us here.
We have a lot to talk about.
I want to give a special thanks and shout out to The Passion, A tribe.
Over in southwest Louisiana, they invited LPB and game notes to be a part of their Chairman's Cup and outstanding golf tournament, benefiting so many charities.
We had a great couple of days out there, even fighting some bad weather, being out there as part of the tournament, talking about game notes, talking about games, and specifically Scott, even on the golf course, they were talking about the start of conference play, even the golfers, though now things are about to wrap up because they're gonna start playing for kicks.
It's exciting time of year because you're familiar.
Opponents are coming up on your schedule.
The teams that you recruit to go against, the teams that you go to, the portal to go against the fix your thing, the things you need to fix for every single year.
And I think this is where the rivalry starts, and that's where it's really fun.
Familiar opponents bring out a little extra in the players.
Yeah, of course some teams have sprinkled in a conference game here and there, but they're all about start playing for keeps.
Northwestern state hope you're enjoying your bye week and joined us here in the next 30 minutes on game day.
Let's show you what's coming up.
Lots of talk about as follows.
We'll start with the Tulane Green Wave.
We'll be visiting with them as they're going up to Skelly Field up in Tulsa to take on the new look Golden Hurricane.
Although they just did something they haven't done in about 25 years.
And that was beat Oklahoma State.
What about the offense that we're going to see in Oxford this afternoon.
And a massive top 15 matchup between LSU and Ole Miss and the raging Cajuns over in Lafayette.
They're set to start Sunbelt play and are set to get back in the win column.
They hope it starts tonight against Marshall.
All of that is coming up in the next 30 minutes.
But let's start in Baton Rouge, out on the bluff where the Southern Jaguars are coming off of a much needed early season bye week four games into the season.
Remember they played in week zero.
They open up in a massive way in the Swac against Jackson State at home on the bluff for the Jags.
The offense has shown signs of being explosive this season.
They have shown it to be able to go on the offensive side.
They just got to keep it consistent.
The problem has been carrying it over into the second has one thing Terrence Graves is focusing on with his Jaguars.
Look, we've seen some of the big plays like this one that you see from Trey Holley, the former LSU Tiger that transferred out to southern.
But the problem for Coach Graves well it's getting to the third in the fourth quarter.
Take Fresno State out of the picture.
In the losses to NC Central and Alabama State.
The Jags went outscored in the second half 38 to 7.
They also have to help them solve the turnovers.
They have four second half turnovers in those same two games after halftime.
Earlier this week, I had a chance to visit with the Jaguars head coach here in the studio, and I asked him about the timing of the bye week after just four games and what he wants us to know about tonight's showdown with JSU.
Well, I'll tell you, it has been great for us because we are able to get some guys back.
We had some uncharacteristic, injuries that occurred from week zero.
Yeah.
And it seemed like every week someone was going down.
Of course.
Last minute quarterback.
Jalen Woods, two weeks into the season and, he got cleared on Friday.
So we're just hoping that, he does well this week with return to play protocols.
And we had a chance to go and do some self scouting and look at, hey, look what we've done and let's do the things we do well and the things we don't do well.
Let's either fix them or get rid of them.
And, so it's been good.
It's been a good bye week.
If you're going to be one to know that first one of those will be against Jackson State.
A lot of anticipation.
Rematch from the championship game a year ago.
Give me a little scouting report on what you'll be focus on when you face, Jackson State on the bluff Saturday night and good things on the bluff right back at home.
You don't have many of those, right?
So it's good to be out on Mumford Stadium.
Well, I tell you what.
They do a great job over there, Jackson.
They're going to want they want to run an established a run.
They want to run the football.
And they won't be aggressive on defense.
It's no secrets.
We got to establish the run.
Of course we got to be able to throw the football.
We got to throw.
We got to score points.
It's no secret we got to score.
And then we got a we got to stop the run, having that looks.
And then we got to eliminate the big plays.
You know, we've given up two minutes for my liking.
And, so we got to eliminate those, and then we gotta, we gotta win the hidden yardage game.
There's no secret we gotta win the special teams game.
And I tell you all the time, special teams do two things.
They use.
They gain momentum or they take momentum away.
And we have to win that.
You take a look at having to clean things up on the offensive side of the ball, Scott, where they rank in the points per game just 15.5 points.
More on that in just a moment.
You see the passing game.
Remember they've only had one quarterback because he lost woods as we talked about that Mississippi Valley game.
Thankfully he hasn't cleared and he's on his way back the one shining spot on their offense.
So far has been the rushing game, ranking fifth in the Swac.
Scott, people might hear a head coach say, look, we've got to score.
It's no secret.
Well, yeah, everybody understand that.
But to his point, what he's talking about is they've got some good starts.
The scoring just disappears in the second half.
And you can't beat a team in just two quarters of football.
Yeah, it's about coming out of the half and playing your best football.
But also there's ways around it.
Obviously you lose your starting quarterback.
He's hopefully on the way back, but it's the other two thirds of the game that need to pick up defensively can play better special teams.
I think special teams often times where you make up for that lack of production on the offensive side of the ball, getting great field position, getting kick returns, getting punt returns.
That's how you set your offense up for success.
And that's a big reason why Terrence Graves is now getting more hands on in terms of coaching to special teams.
And when he was talking about the hidden yardage, I thought of you so often we've had this conversation, you taking us into your NFL locker room with Sean Payton, the hit in yards, penalties, the turnovers, how those all add up to a point where you put yourself behind the eight ball so far.
You kick it back around.
Yeah I can every week we would sit down.
We'd say how many yards penalty yards that we have, how many yards did we not make plays in the special teams game.
And when you add up 100 yards of space of hidden yardage usually equates to seven points in a football game.
Those things add up in the end.
Yeah.
And that's what he's trying to clean up.
It's going to be a big one tonight on the bluff.
You've got the battle of the bands.
You've got the boombox of the will.
With Jackson State and Southern.
The music's going to be outstanding.
The game should be standing as well.
Kelby Givens.
Yes, six and a half sacks.
That's number one in all of Division one football.
He is a menace on the defensive side.
But is it enough to stop Jay State.
It kicks off at 6:00 on the bluff.
Hopefully you have tickets to go.
Should be a great night in Baton Rouge or football.
But if you can't make it, don't worry.
You can see the ball game as it'll be broadcast on ESPN plus.
Sticking in the Swac from the Southern Jaguars to the Grambling Tigers up in North Louisiana.
Hey, Tiger fans.
Remember that whole deal about Ohio State and worrying about what Mickey Jarvis was saying?
Relax.
Two straight wins.
Since then, they were number one in the country.
You're doing okay.
And now they're looking to make it three in a row as they jump into Swac play over in Dallas against Prairie View.
That team last year.
But it lost these two games.
That coaching staff last year include me.
What a loss those two games.
We won those two games.
So that's why I know the difference.
I know the difference because now we picked and we got our guys.
These are my coaches.
We all on one page, one family, one legacy.
So now that's why I know it's going to be different.
Yeah three and one last year.
But we wasn't in this situation.
You know we wasn't in the situation.
But now we're in a situation where we play two tight games and we had to fight to do it and we had to use every call on the call sheet and they played together.
Those two games, he's talking about an OT win at home and then last week's come from behind win late in the ballgame.
Last year this one had a lot of bonus football between Grambling and Prairie View.
Five overtimes in this one before Grambling suffered a tough loss.
In fact, says 2018 Grambling is one and six against purview.
All those games played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which is where they will be again later tonight.
6:00 kickoff.
You can catch all of the action on Swac TV.
September 6th, 2018.
Maybe you don't remember what you did that night, but your own fans might remember that night.
They beat Southern Miss in Hattiesburg 21 to 20.
That was their last non-conference road win until last week.
The win over UTEp, also just a third win on the road overall since 2020.
So you can see why head coach Brian Vincent came into the season high on his returning players and the experience they brought with them.
They're able to do what they had a hard time doing last season, especially in conference play.
Stay in the fight for 60 minutes.
You got to learn how to win and you're put in situations and you can go back to so many times last year, year one, you know, phase one of the rebuild and how many times we in those close games in the fourth last year on the road and we didn't find a way to win, we finally we just didn't get it done.
So to be in that situation, no matter what it was, I thought it was a great team win.
It was a great moment.
It was big for our locker room, you know, and it was big, you know, for our university to go out there and get that done and to be two and one coming, coming back home to Malone State, it's kind of take you back to media days for the conference down in New Orleans when coach was talking about we're picked last.
I like where we're at.
That made me make sense to say, hey, we're overlooking the fact that I had great retention coming back.
And you hear him talk about phase one, phase two of the rebuild.
It's baby steps.
When you finally did something you haven't done in seven, eight years, you got a big non-conference win on the road.
That's a start.
Yeah, absolutely.
It's a start.
I've said time and time again, when you get those wins, just validates everything you've done as a coaching staff, validates everything you're doing as a player.
It puts the trust from the player to the coaching staff and vice versa.
The coaches and the players and it just helps snowball that enthusiasm and that attitude just snowballs after a win.
And this team, they're doing some good things.
They're doing some good things.
They want to improve their passing game, get better on the opposite side, doing those things but running the ball, control the line of scrimmage.
They've been able to do that against a couple good teams.
Yeah, they've been solid and up against UTEp they scored on for the first five possessions in the ballgame.
Again.
Second half they had to hold on because UTEp finally got going.
But remember going into the game we talked about the miners defense, the pressure, how their ranks Ohio in the country getting to the quarterback.
But the running game has really helped Ulm get things established, get going.
Yeah.
You remember before the UTEp game, coach was talking about how they controlled the Texas Longhorns at the line of scrimmage.
He was really worried about that going into the game.
Coming out the game though, Bradley McReynolds and Dorian Lewis.
Those two guys that running back have been outstanding.
And that's where this entire team, that's where the foundation starts offensively.
And obviously when you can run the ball offensively, it helps your defense.
Yeah you certainly would love to have Ahmad Hardy back.
He went to Missouri who right now by the way leads the SEC in rushing game and rushing yards for what they're doing.
But McReynolds is certainly fit and extremely well coming over from South Alabama.
So can they get it done again tonight while we're playing against Arkansas State, a team they haven't beaten since 2009.
And how exciting is this for homecoming.
New threads for this ball game this afternoon.
The gray unis the maroon helmet looking forward to seeing that combo this afternoon.
It's homecoming week.
Coach told everybody to wear maroon.
If you're not up in the Monroe area you can't get to the ball game.
Don't worry.
Sit back and relax.
You can catch the action on ESPN plus.
Well, since the loss to LSU in Baton Rouge, where they scored a single touchdown, the Bulldogs from Louisiana Tech have won two straight and in the process scored 79 points.
But of those 57 and 684 yards of all come in the first half.
Nothing like a blazing start, but Sonny Cumbie has been emphasizing to his team the need to carry it over to the second half and finish like they start games.
The next challenge comes tonight second conference game of the season.
Against who?
UTEp, same team we just talked about that Ulm big company's never lost to UTEp since its arrival in Ruston is three zero, and since becoming conference foes, tech has won 11 of 12.
Both of these teams are set to leave conference USA, so this scheduled should be the last time they meet as conference opponents.
You see, the Bulldogs lead all time 15 to 2.
And how about that defense, the number one scoring defense in the conference allowing under 15 points a game.
So it could be defense against defense.
And a big matchup out in El Paso tonight.
It's a late kick again 8:00 you can check out all the action on ESPN plus.
And then you've got the Magnolia Bowl.
That's right it's LSU at Ole Miss.
Florida was fun.
But we know the Gators have their issues.
A nice win against Clemson Clemson right now is not going to be what we thought they were going to be.
Ole Miss is there we go.
Now you're talking about a matchup.
And that's what we're getting tonight with these two teams.
And get used to this matchup.
This is going to be a permanent match.
That's right.
As the schedule was released last week for the SEC for for those familiar opponents this game it comes down to can you play on the road at Ole Miss like nobody has really been able to do since 2020?
We talked about last week when Tulane went there.
They've led the country in yardage per game over 500 yards per game at home, so they play really well and it's all about getting a fast start.
That's how you control plays.
Teams that play well at home.
They know they know they play well at home.
They have that confidence.
You got to get out to a fast start against teams like LSU and in this ballgame right.
Number four Ole Miss in some ball game right.
Number 13 the combined that's a 17 ranking.
It's the highest ranking combined in this series since going back to 1962.
Yo.
That's gonna make for a great matchup.
Now quarterbacks they'll be in the spotlight for this one for LSU getting thus far looked as good as he has all season.
Last week in the win over southeastern he threw the ball crisply.
He also had some nice runs like this one as well when he took it down inside of the ten yard line.
But running is going to be a focus for LSU and hopefully not all on Nuss Meyer, but it has to be a force for the Tigers going into this ballgame.
LSU 15th in the conference in rushing Ole Miss 16th in defense.
Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin talking about what they see in this matchup.
We know the opposition each week will will you know, certainly test us.
But now you lean on, you know, your foundational principles.
You lean on, you know, what your process is and how you go to work every day, your habits, you know, the way you prepare.
There's no tricks, really.
You know, it's not like, oh, I never saw that coming.
I think you have, you know, when you get down to it, it's it's the team that that really is executing at the highest level.
And doing the little things the right way.
They're going to get theirs.
There's no question.
That's that's a great offense, but I think I think that's played a little bit too much because they know each other so well and they know what to expect in both of them.
On offense and defense know how to make the appropriate adjustments.
I think the receivers, I think they got a really good group of receivers.
You know, and that can make a lot of plays.
You know, I just don't think they've had the numbers that they're probably thinking, but that happens sometimes early in the year.
I look at the players more than scheme when I watch things and I see elite players.
So, you know, we're going to have to play really well and be really challenged.
Now on the offensive side of the ball for Ole Miss, expect to be the third straight start for quarterback Trinidad Chambliss last week against Tulane, he became the fourth rebel quarterback ever to throw for 300 yards in a game and rushed for 100 yards in a single game.
He was supposed to be the backup.
He got to campus over the summer from D-2 Ferris State head coach John Summerall from Tulane.
Well, he saw more of Chambliss and he wanted to see one week ago.
Here's what he had to say about the rebels signal caller.
I have a lot of respect for him, I really do.
I think, you know, everybody made a big deal about Simmons not playing.
I'm like, well, did you watch six play last week?
He's pretty good.
Like, he'd be a starter for a lot of people in college football.
And, I'm really, really impressed with him.
I think for him to have been here just, I guess since June or whatever it is, he looks very comfortable and very confident.
You can tell he's played a lot of football just by his instinctive play and his naturalness.
Very impressive player.
We didn't manage it very well at all.
At D-2, Ferris State over 4000 yards total and 51.
That's right 51 touchdowns in one season.
Okay.
What?
Lovely.
Yeah, that's the football that this guy was supposed be the backup.
And now he's leading the charge.
There's there's no doubt that there's a lot that's a lot of production.
I think the key to this game there's two keys in this game.
But the main key LSU defensively can they control this tempo.
Can they handle this tempo of the Ole Miss offense.
They've been as good as there is in the country especially at home.
And just getting these play after play after play defensively you have to let plays go.
They're going to have success.
You heard Coach Kelly talk about it all week long.
This this offense is good.
They're going to make plays.
You have to let it go and continue to get lined up and play the next play.
Don't let the last play affect you.
I remember one week ago when we talked about Tulane, you were saying, look, this is it's tough to practice for.
It's all about conditioning.
Remember we saw them go on a 53 yard play and in 21 seconds they were all down the line of scrimmage starting another play.
That's linemen and everybody you know moving that.
The other concern to the chunk plays Ole Miss leads the FBS in 30 plus yard plays.
And they're tied for the lead in 20 plus yards.
So when they strike they strike big and they make you pay for it.
I think that's where it comes down to.
LSU defensively is controlling the football and keeping in front of you, knowing they're going to get plays, they're going to get plays in between the 20 yard line.
It's hard for teams to win kicking field goal, so don't worry about those plays.
In between the 20 yard line hunkered down in the red zone play great red zone defense and it's all about getting rush.
Luckily for LSU, they have guys who can get after the passer.
Before we leave the topic, let's circle back to the running game with LSU 15th in the conference, but Ole Miss defensively dead last against the run.
Look, maybe this game is a highlight between two quarterbacks who were slinging it all over the place.
But something might have to give tonight.
And LSU has got the talent.
We just haven't seen it consistently.
Consistently is this afternoon the day we see that running game, try to get going against a team that seemingly can't stop the run.
I think it has to.
And it was my second key, my first key was control the tempo.
A second key was LSU has to be able to run the football.
I know they haven't had to to get the wins and they've been or whatever, whatever they need to do to get the win.
But when you're playing a run defense that is this bad and you have good players offensively, came Durham game time decision injury that'll be that'll be a big one.
But Harlan Berry freshman running back highly touted recruit.
They have guys in the backfield who can run the ball.
I think sometimes it's just about being consistent and sticking to that run.
Well let's see if they can do a number four versus number 13.
It's an afternoon kick.
What a ball game this one should be.
Looks like a lot of points.
Smell that.
I smell the over number four offense against the number three David.
We'll see if it holds off.
Find out.
This game will be broadcast on ABC and it should be a lot of fun to watch.
Indeed.
Well, for the Tulane Greenway, they are coming off licking their wounds on that loss in Oxford one week ago.
They're back on the road this afternoon back my old stomping grounds up to Tulsa there at Skelly Field, taking on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane this afternoon as they kick off conference play in the American since 2022, 15 and three on the road for Tulane, 16 three excuse me 16 and three of the 19 games have won 16.
That's number one in the country.
That's three better than Penn State and two better than Oregon and SMU.
But an interesting challenge, Scott today against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane because last week they did something they haven't done since the 90s.
They've been Oklahoma State.
I know that might not seem like much, but Oklahoma State used to pound Tulsa.
I'm telling you pounded them every year Tulsa got a win.
And what that means is it also means some confidence for this football team, having beaten them by a score of 19 to 12.
Dominic Richardson he ran for a Season-high 146 yards.
Simon Booker six catches for Tulsa.
And don't forget the name Ray Kony.
He leads the nation with 49 tackles for that Tulsa defense.
12.3 per game is number one in the American, and it is number two in the nation.
So that's somebody Tulane's offense is going to have to watch in this ballgame.
But it is Tulane and Tulsa.
Can Tulane right.
The ship after a tough loss one week ago in Oxford against Ole Miss.
Well this would be a great time to do it because it starts off conference play.
It's a 3:00 kick this afternoon where the Green Wave have won five of the last seven against the Golden Hurricane.
Javon white for Tulane is tied for the American lead with three interceptions, something they've been doing very well.
But the takeaways can they make it count this afternoon.
They're going to try and make it four and one on the season.
This game will be broadcast on ESPN.
You so Green Wave fans enjoy.
With so many schools kicking off conference play.
The kernels from Nichols.
They got another week to week.
They're on the road tonight facing eastern Kentucky who's one and three on the season.
But don't forget as of now, despite losing their last three games, the Colonels are in first place in the conference by virtue of beating UW to start the season.
Remember that game?
This is the second of four straight on the road.
They'll be back in conference play next week.
You don't have to travel as far.
They'll be over in Texas to take on Lamar Crow fans.
You can watch this game tonight on ESPN plus.
We have to, I think, play with more confidence.
And I keep telling them, you know, go make a play.
I mean we'll worry about it later.
You know see it, go get it.
And I think, you know, we have to, put them in better positions as a staff.
And I have to continue to try that to, build our confidence, too.
I think as players, you know, and stuff and, you know, the where you should go out and play the game.
Well, let's see if they can turn things around.
Cowboys in a bit of a fog over red that remember they had the tough loss in Louisiana had the one win.
Then you have the go for two loss.
And then they got beat pretty good up there in Utah last week.
So now you're in the conference play taking on Stephen at Foster aren't they.
Citizen has been outstanding on offense.
About seven and a half yards per carry this season.
The good news for the Cowboys and Mafia.
Viator jumping back into conference play.
The Cowboys have won four straight against the Lumberjacks.
This game kicks off at 7:00 tonight.
By the way that cowboy offense 21st and FCS and 14th and first down.
I just got to get the defense to step it up and see if they can do it tonight at seven.
If you're not making the trip across the border.
You can check out all the action on ESPN plus.
How about the Lions from southeastern?
Well good to be back at Strawberry Stadium.
Had a nice experience at Tiger Stadium.
Got that score late in the ball game against LSU.
The loss was expected, but now they can get back at it.
But what a challenge they have tonight.
It's the first meeting between University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Lions of Southeastern.
It's a 6:00 kick tonight over in Strawberry Stadium.
Caleb Proctor leads the Lions with three sacks and five tackles for loss.
He didn't have a challenge tonight, though, against that offense and has a team undefeated on the season.
You're not going out for the game against.
Should be great weather, but if you can't make it out on Hammond, don't worry about it.
You can watch it on ESPN plus.
Speaking of teams in a funk, now we get to the Cajuns from Louisiana.
Three losses in the last four outings.
That one lone win Scott remember came against the Cowboys from McNeese.
At home, the losses have come in a variety of ways.
They get set to open up Sunbelt Conference play against Marshall.
It's a rematch of the championship game one year ago that did not go the Cajuns way in a big way, but a lot of those people from Marshall have left now when they all went and follow the coach to a different school head coach, Michael Desormeaux, that's despite the fog.
Despite some of the struggles, he doesn't see any quitting his team.
When you work as hard as this group has, you know you don't let it go.
And that's and that's the bottom line, you know, I mean, you know, we've dealt with injuries, you know, the last four years that have just have been, you know, just kind of, you know, really just challenging, right, to say the least in that spots that they're in.
And our team has always responded.
They've always stepped up when they needed to, you know, and this is no different.
We got we got to have the same thing happen.
So, you know, I mean, these guys have worked really hard to have a really good season.
And, when you when you care a whole lot about something, you can't give up on it, you know, just because things aren't going your way.
Thank you all.
You know, you got to go back to work.
And we talked about it yesterday.
Doesn't matter how you feel.
Doesn't matter the way you feel after a game doesn't matter.
You know how you know the emotions that you have.
You just got to go back to work and you got to keep working.
And you know, that's what they've done every week.
Getting back in that win column was so close one week ago.
But then the heartbreak in Ypsilanti because remember the score late in the ball game.
But then there was that squib kick didn't go is what they needed us to do.
And what happened eastern Michigan went 41 yards in just 41 seconds, had a big splash play and a wind up leading to the game winning field goal for them to get the win over the Cajuns last Saturday.
About that squib kick.
Remember one week ago we said, I wonder if coach will talk about it.
He did.
We shouldn't have squib kicked.
It is what I will say.
And if you do, then what you got to do is you.
It's a different type of kick.
You're not trying to hit somebody.
So you get him the ball in the 35.
So that was a mistake right there.
You know, the biggest thing I think was really probably the explosive someone asked me, you know, was a mistake.
Did y'all think it was going to be a run and.
No, I mean, we're in zone coverage.
We were fine with them running the ball.
We were gonna try to stop it with the front and the linebackers.
You know, we just.
It's just eye discipline.
We came off of it.
And then after that, you know, they got down a field goal range.
And then you're just trying to, you know, create a negative play.
You know I thought we competed on some balls down the field stuff like that.
Want some coverage reps.
But they're already in field goal range.
And you know they got a kicker with a big like we hit it.
You heard him say that they shouldn't have done it Scott to your point from one week ago he did also say it was the plan.
But to your point it needed to go for it.
Yeah, he went kicking it too short than the ball just died.
And all of a sudden you've given up.
You've got him.
Great field position 41 yards, 41 seconds.
Yeah.
You get a little more power on it now it dribbles down there.
Maybe the kick returner bobbles it or doesn't pick it up.
Quite right now your coverage unit gets down there and gets on top of them smothers them.
That's usually why you like a squib kick in that situation teams.
You're a little bit scared of kicking the ball up high up in the air.
You're your coverage team not getting down there in time and then lanes creating.
So I think I think not so much problem with the kick just the execution of it.
Yeah.
And then then like he said a big splash.
Play a third down.
He throws over the head and they want to get the field goal.
All right let's talk about their execution real quick because remember we talked about how much Bill looked comfortable.
Louisiana is the only team in the conference that has two running backs in the top ten.
We've talked about they're two headed monster.
So how important is it to see their quarterback now feel settle remember one week ago Checkdown Charlie.
He set in the pocket a lot longer.
How can that help open things up for a running back tandem that is so good.
So you can try to start conference play and get back in the win column.
Yeah I think you saw tremendous growth by Daniel Beal from two weeks ago to last week.
I thought he did a nice job in the passing game.
And to your point you have two outstanding running backs.
Xylem Perry 7.5 yards per carry.
He's averaging.
So you'd be nice to say just turn around him the ball through play.
You can't do that realistically.
So just to throw to those two guys in the backfield is going to help open up your passing game.
I think you can take some more play action shots when you run the ball that effectively get the defense to suck up there, get a nice play fake, get the ball down the field a little more vertical passing.
And with Sampson and some of the guys out there now getting more and more comfortable with Daniel Beal to your point, there's your chance.
Because now you got to worry about the run.
Now maybe you can go over the top because the guys are feeling comfortable.
And Beal's feeling comfortable taking that ball.
You have that downfield threat.
It's all set up through the running game.
You have a really good running game, so take advantage of it and get a little more.
Get a little more vertical in the passing game.
They're going to try to get back in the win column tonight at home.
Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium 7:00 with Marshall coming into town as you heard Scott just match what Tyler Perry's seven and a half yards for rushing attempt.
Hopefully you're going to get out there in Lafayette.
If he can't, you can check out all of the action on ESPN plus.
Again, all sorts of conference action throughout the state.
It should be a great night of football.
We'll be back Sunday to recap on game notes.
But until then for Scott Shanley, I'm Victor Hall.
Enjoy the games everyone.
